Day 2

Heyas gang,

Once again here's a thought or something I took away from each session. Hope you enjoy. :)

Thinking Forward
Third Culture Leadership

Dave Gibbons

Leaders must adapt even if it's painful to reach out to the 3rd generation i.e. creative types, artists etc etc

Aid vs. Trade
Andrew Rugasira

Kindness is the best kind of aid; a key point is to: help people help themselves.

Leveraging Your Past
Wess Stafford

Pain can be a catalyst for a leader; pain leads to passion leads to move/doing something. (Last part was my own take away)

Eyewitness to Power
David Gergen (Interview with Bill Hybels)

Create a culture not just teach people about things; you (as a leader) have to get better and learn.

Switch
Chip Heath and Dan Heath (Interview with Craig Groeschel)

Change is filled with conflict; big problems have small solutions.

Bono, the Church… Three Years Later (videocast)
Bono

Revamp the way missions are shown in a typical church setting.

An Interview with Tony Blair (videocast)
Tony Blair (Interview with Jim Mellado)

Sidenote: I really enjoyed hearing from Tony Blair. Just was fun and one cool line he stated is that he felt like a normal guy when asked about when he first felt like a leader. I thought that was pretty cool.

Your irreducible core: you can't back away & must hold to it (stand your ground).

Final Session

Last one.

We're gonna watch a video interview of former Prime Minister Blair. This one I'm excited about and what we'll (and myself too) is gonna learn.

Not quite sure why I'm excited still should be interesting.

Afternoon Sessions

Lots of good stuff today. I'm learning a bunch.

Next is Bono & then Tony Blair. :D

This Morning's Session

It went from 3rd culture to Africa to a life story.

One thing that I'm taking away: pain leads to passion leads to doing something. My own thought/take away there.

Looking forward to the rest of today. :)

Day 1

Heyas gang,

Here's a thought or thing I took away from each speaker today. It isn't all my notes rather, just a one liner/one of my thoughts from each one. Enjoy. :)

Leading In a New Reality
Bill Hybels

Leaders thrive in rogue waves & need to be ready for them.

Hiring, Firing, and Board Meltdowns(videocast)
Bill Hybels, Patrick Lencioni, Henry Cloud, David Ireland, Carly Fiorina

Boards can have meltdowns & they need terms limits to prevent board member exhaustion.

Manage Differently NOW
Gary Hamel

Churches need to be dynamic & change with the world around them.

Leading People to the Prodigal God
Tim Keller

Spiritual deadness is the issue in churches & "a new level of repentance" is the solution.

A Leadership Case Study: Jessica Jackley and the KIVA Story
Jessica Jackley (Interview with Jim Mellado

God can work even with small stuff.

Against All Odds
Harvey Carey

Leaders are to equip, (&) not just hire more staff members, & get out there vs just huddle and DO IT!

Session 4

We learned about a small company called Kiva lends money to entrepreneurs. Lesson (my take away thought): God can do great stuff even with small amounts.

Our last session was about going against the odds. One word: wow. I'm fired up about doing something now vs. sitting on my butt. Thanks Pastor Carey.

Now just processing the day and will give a full summary later tonight.

Session 3

Take the prodigal parable and flip it on its head. Seriously.

I got some real insights. Younger son only was into the father's stuff. Older was only into the father's stuff.

Both did not want the father aka Jesus.

Older just wanted the money. How did he get it? Did the right things/never disobeyed.

Younger wanted the money. How did he get it? Be totally bad/wrong.

Another insight: it cost the father to have his younger son back. What ya mean you ask? All the new robes, sandals, rings: older brother's things.

Just wow. :)

Will give a complete overview later tonight of today's Summit.

Session 2

This dealt with hiring, firing, and board meltdowns.

Lot of good info there plus things going on at Redeemer.

Plus info about how a church should be dynamic and flexible with change swirling around them.

I so wish Redeemer's leaders and others could be here.

It is almost like a real world wake up call aimed right at the church. Seriously.

I myself am having a mini Popeye moment. Do I take this info and buck change OR pour myself into another church.

Lots of info to chew on while having lunch. Panada Express if ya were wondering. :D

Session 1

There was lots of good info and ideas. I will say I wish my own church leaders & congregation were here. They need to do some of the stuff Bill Hybels mentioned.

I know I'm a leader and need to kick some stuff into gear.

Funny sidenote: Twitter is down. I wonder if Summit people crashed it.

Countdown Clock Has Started

Heyas everyone,

I'm just relaxing before the big Leadership Summit 2009 starts tomorrow morning. I'm excited and wondering what new things I will learn from the various leaders who will be speaking.

The one change this year is that I'm not actually at Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois. This time around I'm attending a satellite site: Granger Community Church. It should be fun and excited. I've never been at GCC for the summit before; I have been here for their weekend services and another workshop a couple of years ago.

We'll see what happens and be sure to keep an eye here on my blog for my thoughts.

We'll see you tomorrow! :)
